Radio detection of cosmic rays with LOFAR and beyond
Radio detection of cosmic rays with LOFAR and beyond
12:00 - 13:00
Detecting cosmic rays using the radio emission generated in extensive air showers has proven to be a highly effective technique. The LOFAR telescope, which consists of hundreds of densely spaced antennas measuring in the 30-80 MHz range is particularly well suited to probe the features of radio footprints in great detail. LOFAR has been measuring cosmic rays in the 1017-1018 eV energy range for nearly a decade. In this talk I will give an overview of the results obtained at LOFAR, including precise Xmax measurements and the determination of the radiation energy contained in air showers. I will also discuss the prospects of detecting cosmic rays with the SKA telescope and the Cosmic-Ray Energy Cross-Calibration Array, which will use radiation energy to cross-calibrate the energy scales of different experiments.
