Firmware development and use cases for the CMS tracker phase II upgrade

During the 3rd long shut-down of the LHC the current CMS tracker will be replaced by a completely new one. Currently the tracker community is testing prototype modules which have a novel design driven by the demanding environment they will operate in and the fact that they need to provide input to the L1 trigger. The first element in the modules' read-out chain is an FPGA which can handle the large data rates coming of these modules. During this talk the tracker phase II project, hardware and firmware involved and some use cases in test set-ups will be introduced.
