Description
abstract: During solar explosive events - flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) - electrons, protons and ions are accelerated from their average energy of a few 100 eV in the corona to energies that may on occasion attain tens of MeV for electrons and some GeV for protons and ions. The Sun offers a unique possibility to observe energetic particles near Earth by particle detectors in space and on ground and remotely in the solar atmosphere, especially through their gamma-ray, hard X-ray and radio emission. Characteristic time scales for the evolution of the energetic particle populations are accessible to observation, and the coronal environment where the acceleration occurs can be mapped. In this seminar I will illustrate some radiative signatures and in situ measurements of energetic particles, and ideas about their acceleration.
