Title: 

Going beyond the Standard Model with the CMS detector

Abstract: 

In 2012, the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider announced the discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. This discovery corroborated the long-standing success of the SM, which has accurately predicted experimental results for over 60 years. Despite its impressive predictive power, the SM has some significant shortcomings that suggest it may not fully explain our understanding of Nature.

 

For instance, the SM does not include a description of quantum gravity, nor does it account for the observed abundance of dark matter in the Universe or the asymmetry between ordinary matter and antimatter. To address these limitations, several models and extensions of the SM have been proposed throughout history.

 

This talk focuses on the efforts of the CMS Collaboration to tackle these questions by conducting searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). I will review the latest CMS analyses for BSM particles and place these results in the context of their implications for the existence of possible new particles. These new particles could potentially solve the shortcomings of the SM, offering explanations for quantum gravity, dark matter, and matter-antimatter asymmetry.
